Janet Jackson: Dear Black Woman

Dear Black Woman,

Your outer appearance is merely the surface of who you are. In many facets it is a bold interpretation of your character and beauty. Yet your curves and distinct body is more than just who you are. You are beautiful and that is deeper than the skin and ways you present yourself. Love You the TRUE YOU!

Janet Damita Jo Jackson (May 16, 1966) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and dancer. A prominent figure in popular culture, she is known for sonically innovative, socially conscious and sexually provocative records, and elaborate stage shows.

In October I continued my Women’s appreciation series and decided to indulge in some of the women I find to be inspiring and uplifting. I wanted to hear and read about the stories beyond simply tabloid or gossip. So, I picked up Janet Jackson’s “True You” which tells of her upbringing and the depths of her Jackson lineage as well as her story of self discovery and love. Upon reading her story I found out things I previously before did not know of, which included her tumultuous marriage to James DeBarge, her incessant belief of self doubt, and her struggle with her weight. She began show business young in an already talented family. She would do Vegas shows with her brother Tito. Yet by the age of ten she landed a role on Good Times. As she embarked on this journey her life began by having her alter her schedule and thrust into a lifestyle that would even wear down a fully functioning adult. She bore so much, and as she grew in herself, sexuality, and business mind she could not shake her level of worry about her belief of her own self worth.

I will not go into a spark notes about the book but I would suggest you take the time and read, as it unlocked even some deep residue that I myself carried about public perception, acceptance, and even the ability to set boundaries.

Janet has wowed the world and as the 2nd most decorated and famous Jackson only behind the legend that is her brother. She has stood the test of time selling millions of albums and touring worldwide. Creating her own fan base and living up to high standards as the baby of her family.

She embodies sensuality, intimacy, and has a knack for setting the right moods. Along with such she has thoroughly outworked and surpassed levels most can’t even fathom. A business woman, a daughter, a mother, sister, and overall an exquisite lady. Janet is the culmination of all things manifest in due time. Her resilience and strength make her someone that has not only captured my admiration, but has also eclipsed my understanding of her in all facets.

It is my belief that we all have the need to feel special. It is this need that can bring out the best in us, yet the worst in us. – Janet Jackson

Janet, without you the likes of stage performers like BeyoncĂ© would have no inspiration, the diligence in your craft and the expansion of your abilities are unmatched. The beauty you possess through your music, heart, and gifts are one that I myself truly appreciate. You are absolutely an inspiration and the millions you’ve inspired, helped, and motivated are limitless.

Dear Janet,

Thank You

Sincerely,

A Black Man
